Guns N' Roses - Terminal 5 - Rippin' Up NYC

Axl Rose and company brought the noise and the bone-crunching guitar tone to Terminal 5 tonight. The band was on fire and still makes you rock as hard as you remember. The sold out crowd was crushing inside Terminal 5 to an excruciatingly uncomfortable level, but fans didn't care. Guns N' Roses did not disappoint - they played everything for hours and Axl's snakeskin snarl made for some pretty wicked photographs. Thanks for keepin' the flame alive Axl!

Dina & Adam's Fantastic Dance Party at Kiss N' Fly

I LOVE Applause New York City. I think its hands-down the best young performing arts program in New York and the quality of the performances is simply stellar. HAIR tells the story of the "tribe", a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the "Age of Aquarius" living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. It's refreshing to see the 9-12 graders perform this mature content. Here are my highlighted photographs from last week's performance.

The Freaks Ball XII at the Brooklyn Bowl was last night and the music was nothing short of stellar! What an incredible lineup! The Freaks Ball is an annual party hosted by the influential Yahoo-group the NYC Freaks. Over the years, the event has included a handful of bands before they broke on a national level, including The Duo, Robert Randolph, Apollo Sunshine, RANA, Bustle in Your Hedgerow, New Mastersounds and members of the extended Daptone family. This year, Freaks Ball XII Night two featured the Freaks Ball Stars that included Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds), Joe Russo, Marco Benevento, Ron Johnson (Warren Haynes Band), Eric Deutch and special guests Eric Krasno, Scott Metzger and Warren Haynes.

Julia's Elegant Bat Mitzvah

Julia's Bat Mitzvah oozed elegance from every corner of the room. After a moving service at Central Synagogue, the party moved to the gorgeous 583 Park Avenue. The winter wonderland produced by the inimitable Gourmet Advisory Services, and Total Entertainment, included a giant snow globe as the centerpiece of the room. Dejuan Stroud designed the decor of the room. Epic indeed.

As a student of New Orleans Jazz, I've lived and breathed New Orleans music from the time I was a freshman at Tulane. One of the a quintessential New Orleans institutions, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, discovered new out-of-town admirers after Hurricane Katrina, and it brought many of them along for a concert on Saturday night at Carnegie Hall to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Special guests included with special guests Allen Toussaint, Blind Boys of Alabama, Del McCoury Band, Ed Helms, GIVERS, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, My Morning Jacket, Steve Earle, Tao Seeger, Trey McIntyre Project, Trombone Shorty, yasiin bey (FKA Mos Def). The weather in South Florida over the holiday break was spectacular. It provided such a nice opportunity to disconnect and recharge the batteries of the soul. I barely took out my camera (mostly because I played tennis all day long almost everyday), but couldn't resist clicking the shutter on our friends' boat in Miami. Amanda has the most beautiful smile - one that lights up the entire city, and when we put her on the taxi cab, her whole face was positively glowing! Then once inside the incredible Mandarin Oriental New York Hotel, we captured Amanda looking so elegant. The room was one of the most stunning I've photographed. In anticipation of their B'nei Mitzvah, we had a super fun sunset Friday evening with Jessica and Matthew in the Hamptons - one of the last great weekends of the summer's end. The light was golden and we were blessed with another gorgeous Hampton sunset. A few of these photographs were enlarged 8 feet tall for decoration at the party. Just got back from an incredible vacation in Spain with the family. Sadly, I could not put my camera down - I was in SPAIN, after all. :) We traveled quite a bit and hit Madrid, Barcelona, Moraira (southeastern cost of Spain - Costa Blanca), and the gem of the trip...Ibiza. I loved Ibiza so much, I wanted to start with showcasing those photographs. There was so much art all over Spain - it lived and breathed artistic expression every where. From the culinary delights to the insane Gaudi-inspired architecture. Even the airport in Madrid took inspiration from the genius Antoni Gaudi. It was an unforgettable trip and wish I was still there!

The following series of photographs are of the magnificent Sagrada Familia - the most spectacular cathedral on earth. When I walked inside, I nearly dropped to my knees and began to weep. The stunning architecture and beauty are incomparable to anything I've ever seen in my life.

We stopped for an afternoon in the chilly (I'm talking icy cold) waterfalls in Algar. Gal snapped this shot - I'm teaching her good, eh?

...then it was off to the ridiculously tall mountains in Guadalest to visit then ancient hilltop town and cathedral. Occupying one of the most stunning positions in Spain, this small village is precariously perched on the pinnacle of a granite mountain, giving fabulous views across the valley carved out by the River from which the village takes its name.

Edy makes the golden mountain look even better. :)

We started our trip in Madrid, and during our tour, the Pope was visiting! So there were millions of youths swelling the city beyond it's normal capacity.

Here's a gorgeous indoor/outdoor market. You wanted to eat everything in this place. They cool the market, not with air conditioning, but with misting jets. Check them out coming out of the roof...

Central Park Summer Portrait Heaven

A friend of mine once said about a child portrait shoot, "What you get is up to the Photo Gods." I agree with that to a certain degree. For example, some kids are cranky, shy, etc. However, I look at it a different way. If you can engage right away, get them to trust you, feel comfortable with you, then you have 80% of the work done. The remaining 20% is their personality. Well on this particular shoot, I had 100% working in my favor! The gorgeous late afternoon sunlight, beautiful happy children, and my personality to engage them - all came together for this fun series of photographs.

Almost a decade ago was the last time that I was on top of a ferris wheel. Since my kids are at sleep-away camp right now, I'm feeling a bit nostalgic about the ole' days when they were little and we'd ride the ferris wheel. I dusted off this photograph and it struck me as a beautiful night time scene. I've given it a new lease on life with painted tonalities. I really like the finished look.

Wow - what a night! The red carpet arrivals at the Beacon Theater was a star studded affair! We viewed the first 2 episodes of the final season of Entourage and then we were off to the afterparty at the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life (whale room) at the American Museum of Natural History. I had the amazing opportunity to cover the event for the executive producer/writer/director, all around awesome Doug Ellin and the impeccable HBO. HBO had produced some incredible series over the decades and Entourage now proudly sits at the top of its class. Entourage is my favorite tv show of all time and to capture these images for the final season red carpet premiere was as exciting as it gets. This was seriously such a fun, non-stop laugh fest...and then there was that hilarious dip in the puddle!

The Algarve Coastline, Portugal

The Algarve coast line stretches about 100 miles from the western-most tip to the Spanish border, and as well as being most well known for its expansive and extensive beaches of fine golden sands, you will also find some of the most dramatic cliff faces and rock-formations in the world.

The western end which juts out into the Atlantic is a rugged, undeveloped area, which has retained its natural charm, and is extremely dramatic, with cliffs of black rock from which Algarvian fishermen cling precariously hundreds of feet above the sea, for hours on end.

I had the incredible opportunity to explore the coast with my camera around sunset and captured some really beautiful images that are some of my own personal favorites. I went back to the source files and redeveloped them with my new black and white tools and have essentially created some fine art gems. I dusted off this image taken while in Rome a few years ago. I breathed new life into the photograph by infusing it with a little MJ secret sauce - enabling it to really shimmer in the late afternoon light. Look how the shadows are cast across the sides of the buildings's shutters. I'm really enjoying the process of going back through my archives to pick out special images that can be digitally painted with a fresh perspective.

Every now and then I'm blessed with pristine weather to help capture beautiful images. Here's a great shot from last night's portrait session with Ethan for images that I'll include in the cool sign-in book I'm producing for him. The golden sunset was back-lighting Ethan and my off-camera strobe added just a hint of light coming from camera left. I framed him between Bethesda Fountain and the blooming cherry blossoms resulting in this really cool image.

At the brand new Gansevoort Park Avenue NYC, Eric's 40th surprise party was a true Hollywood affair. Gourmet Advisory Services designed the party at the uber-hip hotel with a nostalgic "Batman" theme (Eric's favorite). Here are some nice shots that showcase the ambient feel of the room and the delicious food (check out Sylvia Weinstock's Batman Cake).

It was an honor to photograph Katie Brown at her workshop in Red Hook for the cover of this month's New York Family magazine. She was a true class act - and incredibly fun and playful in front of the camera. Katie Brown is the host of PBS's cooking, crafting and gardening show "Katie Brown Workshop;" author of a handful of books on entertaining, and frequent guest on "Good Morning America" and "The Today Show."

Arizona Sunsets

Spent a few days in Scottsdale, Arizona last week and captured some beautiful sunsets (and cloud structures). We took the kids mountain biking and hiking in the desert and will share those photos later. Hope these bring a smile to your face...

This was taken about 40 minutes before the clouds clear away and revealed the beautiful sunsets you see above. I LOVE this shot!

Not a sunset, but a great cloud structure deep in the Sonoran desert.

Connecting with fabulous fashion designer Lela Rose was so easy - we both have the mutual love of biking around New York City! When I pulled up to her amazing Tribeca apartment for the 5th anniversary February 2011 cover photo shoot, I saw this incredible over-sized tricycle outside her door and I smiled before even walking in the door. Her Texas-sized charm won us all over and her beautiful children were great sports! Their apartment is a reflection of Lela's creative spirit. Dr. John, Maceo Parker, Lettuce @BrooklynBowl - Wow!

Legendary artists Dr. John and Maceo Parker joined the tightest funk band on the planet, Lettuce for an evening of all-out party time funkiness! The Brooklyn Bowl hosted Soul to Soul II to benefit Haiti one year later. Rumor that Prince was to join after his MSG show didn't pan out, but that didn't stop the sold out crowd from having the time of their life.

I use the word magnificent because it truly was! Guastivino's was transformed by Lawrence Scott of Lawrence Scott Events into an equestrian wonderland. The star of the show was Hayley and her incredible smile lit up the New York City night for her friends and family to share in the celebration! What a party it was! Congratulations to Hayley on a great job reading her Haftorah!

Muse - The Biggest Band You've Never Seen

If there is one band on the road today that continues to consistently up the ante in the visuals department, it’s Muse. In fact, their new stage construction is so gigantic, it blocked MTV’s outgoing broadcast signal during this month’s Rock Am Ring festival in Germany.

Muse are an English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, England, formed in 1994. They are one of the biggest touring acts in the world right now - but even I just saw them for the very first time only a few weeks ago. They have a HUGE sound and and incredible stage show. Their primary genres are progressive rock,space rock, and alternative rock, but they also integrate parts of electronica, indie rock, rock opera. the band have cited artists such as Queen, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Primus, The Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, Depeche Mode, The Cure and The Smiths as musical influences.

American hasidic jewish reggae musician, Matisyahu, delivered his eclectic blend of traditional reggae, rock and hip hop beat-boxing sounds to the sold-out crowd at the Brooklyn Bowl last night. Not only was it his tour-opener to kick-off Chanukah's Festival of Light, but the show itself was a feast of light. At the center of the room, spun what seemed like the world's largest disco dreidel ball. Check out some of these cool shots...

Bob Pittman, Whoopi Goldberg, Joni Evans, Lesley Stahl and many smart women investors at the new Blue Ribbon Ren Lounge kicked it off. PureWow - even got 10 minutes on the giant Times Square Billboard during the event as Bob Pittman announced the launch. Rachel Felder is the editor and Ryan Harwood is the CEO.

Here's a cool shot from tonight's sunset shoot in Bridgehampton - on Scott Cameron Beach at the edge of Mecox Bay. The sun has just dropped below the horizon line, the sky was crystal clear, the bay was reflecting golden colors, and Samantha wasn't ready to go home - she was making sure I got that shot!
